Applying for Benefits for Back and Spinal Disorders
Back pain is discussed in section 1.04, disorders of the spine, in the musculoskeletal disorders section of the Social Security Administration's (SSA) listing of impairments. As listed impairments, back and spinal disorders are eligible for Social Security Disability/Supplemental Security Income (SSD/SSI) benefits. It is not sufficient to simply claim that you have a back or spinal problem, however.
To be granted SSD or SSI benefits, your application must demonstrate that your condition prevents you from working in a substantial gainful activity. Most people who apply for SSD/SSI benefits need the assistance of an attorney to obtain benefits. The attorneys at Milam Law understand the impairment listing and how to gather the appropriate medical information to submit to the SSA.

Back Pain and Social Security Disability Lawyers
Back pain can be the result of an injury from a car accident, a slip-and-fall accident or failed back surgery. It can also be caused by aging, arthritis, and wear and tear on the spinal discs. Common disc injuries and conditions include degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, ruptured discs, fractured discs and compressed discs.
People with back injuries may experience symptoms that include:
- Severe pain in the back, lower back and neck
- Pain in the arms and legs
- Numbness or tingling in the extremities
- Muscle spasms
- Reduced muscle strength
- Decreased range of motion
Any of these symptoms may prevent you from doing your former job or another job. You may also experience debilitating side effects from pain medication. To get SSD/SSI benefits, however, you must prove with medical evidence that your residual functional capacity does not allow you to work.
In addition to a report from your doctor explaining your condition and limitations, you need imaging results from X-rays, CAT scans or MRIs. Depending on your condition, motor function tests may also be necessary. It is important to see your doctor when you are experiencing bad pain and other severe symptoms so they are appropriately documented.
