SSD and SSI Benefits Attorneys
Chronic respiratory system and breathing disorders can cause an irreversible loss of pulmonary function. People with these disorders often experience coughing, wheezing, dyspnea on exertion, sputum production, hemoptysis and chest pain. Because numerous other diseases share these symptoms, Social Security Disability/Supplemental Security Income (SSD/SSI) applicants must prove that they have a serious respiratory disorder to obtain benefits.
You should go to the emergency room when your respiratory disorder is at its worst, both to get medical treatment and to provide documentation for your claim. Our lawyers will work closely with you to ensure your application contains all necessary medical information about your breathing disorder and its effect on your ability to work.

Breathing and Respiratory Disorders Social Security Disability Claims
Whether caused by heredity, a chronic condition, surgery, infection, lung cancer, toxic mold exposure or chemical exposure, respiratory disorders can seriously impair your ability to perform any function. Respiratory disorders that may qualify for SSD/SSI benefits include:
- Asthma
- Chronic pulmonary insufficiency, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD)
- Chronic persistent lung infections
- Sleep-related breathing disorders
- Cystic fibrosis
Respiratory disorder diagnoses and prognoses may include physical exam results, a complete medical history, arterial blood gas tests, spirometry tests, exercise tests and chest X-ray or other appropriate imaging results. Most patients need subsequent pulmonary function testing to determine the severity of their disorders. Your physician must also document the disease's effect on your ability to work in a substantial gainful activity.
Patients who have lung transplants are automatically allowed 12 months of disability benefits. Their claims will be evaluated after the first 12 months.
