Social Security Disability/Supplemental Security Income (SSD/SSI) for Cancer
The malignant neoplastic diseases section of the Social Security Administration's (SSA) impairment listing includes most types of cancer, with the exception of cancer associated with HIV infection. The SSA considers many factors when reviewing cancer claims, but the primary criteria are still whether the individual can work in a substantial gainful activity despite his or her disease.
The SSA makes exceptions for certain types of cancer such as inflammatory breast cancer, metastatic brain carcinoma, small cell lung cancer, and cancer of the pancreas, gall bladder, bile ducts or liver. These claims are often expedited, especially if the person's condition is very serious or terminal. Cancers not included in these exceptions may be eligible for benefits; however, you must provide considerable medical evidence to demonstrate your need.
