Sacramento Neck Pain & Social Security Disability

Our Experienced Attorneys Can Help You With Neck Injury Claims

Neck injuries have many similarities to back injuries because they typically involve trauma to the spinal cord and discs. Severe neck injuries can cause more devastating types of disability than back injuries, however. The higher on the spine an injury occurs, the more spinal nerves and body systems may be affected. Quadriplegia, for example, is caused by an injury to the cervical (upper) region of the spine.

Less severe injuries may also be eligible for Social Security Disability/Supplemental Security Income (SSD/SSI) benefits as well. Neck pain is discussed in section 1.04, disorders of the spine, in the musculoskeletal disorders section of the Social Security Administration's (SSA) listing of impairments. Musculoskeletal disorders such as neck and spinal injuries may result in one or more of the following impairments:

  • Inability to walk
  • Impaired motor functions such as grasping, pulling or pushing
  • Severe pain

By working with an experienced SSD/SSI lawyer, you will likely increase your chances of receiving benefits for your neck injury. At Milam Law, we have more than 20 years of experience with SSD and SSI claims. We provide compassionate service and knowledgeable guidance throughout the duration of your claim.

Neck Pain and Social Security Disability

Injuries to the neck, spinal cord or discs can include herniated discs, ruptured discs, fractured discs, compressed discs and tears to the spinal cord. In addition, many people suffer from degenerative disc disease, which is caused by aging and wear and tear. People with these conditions may require long-term pain management, which may alleviate the pain but render them unable to work.

Pain, numbness, tingling and loss of motion often spread from the neck to other parts of the body, including the back and the extremities. A loss of dexterity in the hands and fingers may prevent you from doing many types of work. Physical exams, X-rays, CAT scans or MRIs as well as physician observation of symptoms are necessary to receive SSD/SSI benefits. See your doctor when you are experiencing bad pain and other severe symptoms so they are appropriately documented.
