Disorders of the Skin
Psoriasis and eczema (atopic dermatitis) are listed in the Social Security Administration's (SSA) impairment listing for skin disorders as types of dermatitis. To be eligible for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, your medical reports must show extensive skin lesions persisting for at least three months despite treatment.
Skin diseases are primarily diagnosed by a physical examination of the skin. A biopsy may be necessary where the changes in the skin are not typical or characteristic. Blood tests may be used to diagnose some of the symptoms or complications of certain skin disorders. Our lawyers will make sure your application includes the appropriate medical testing results.

Psoriasis, Eczema and Social Security Disability
Your medical reports must include specific details about how your symptoms impair your ability to work in a substantial gainful activity. Symptoms which may prevent people from working include severe itching and skin infections, pustules, muscle aches and fever. Some patients also suffer depression or other mood disorders because of the difficulty of living with a painful chronic illness.
Additional complications of psoriasis may include compromised heart and kidneys, nail deformity and bone damage. Psoriatic arthritis can cause severe joint pain, swelling and stiffness. Patients may also experience side effects from psoriasis medicine and treatments. Light therapy treatments, for example, have caused skin cancer in some patients.
SSD/SSI Claims for Burn Injuries
The SSA evaluates electrical, chemical and thermal burns by looking at damage to the skin as well as other affected body parts. This may include the nerves, musculoskeletal system, eyes, lungs, heart and kidneys. Skin lesions must have lasted or be expected to last continuously for at least 21 months.
